Augusto Boal is internationally known as a dramatist, theatre worker who believes that people don't have to be passive spectators all the time. Through his various ways and means he designed including image theatre, forum theatre etc. and workshop training, people command the means of producing theatre to voice out and to express themselves. His practice and theories are now very much part of any educational theatre and community theatre discourse.
Augusto Boal never sees his theatre as therapy but he was invited to give keynotes speeches and demonstrations at the Conferences of therapists and psychologists. He does feel that theatre has therapeutic effects and what he developed -Rainbow of Desire and Cops in the Head helps individuals, with the input of peers and workshop co-participants, help to clarify goals, get to know oneself, why one has been restrained from doing various things, etc. As such, rainbow of desire and cops in the head are ways that help promoting personal growth.
For the theatre enthusiasts, the technique helps to understand characters, in rehearsals, and writing plays.
