Set in the propaganda department of one of North Korea’s largest textile factories, Vinalon tells the story of a group of workers as they prepare for a visit by the 'Dear Successor.'
Based on the real-life industry that produces the homegrown ‘miracle fabric’ of synthetic vinalon, this two act play opens a window into the otherwise inaccessible world of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
It goes behind the public face of rigidly choreographed chanting obedience, to portray the people who find a way to survive - and, for some, to thrive - in a system where betrayal and denunciation are their constant companions.
It chronicles their shifting relationships and loyalties, as they prepare for the all-important event, suddenly complicated by the strange arrival of the young woman from the countryside with a questionable past; heralding uncertainty and disorder at a time when order is everything.
