The Chung Chi Orchestra, CUHK, formerly known as The Chinese University Orchestra, was founded in 1983 with the aim of promoting interest in music within the campus of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and providing a high standard orchestral training to young musicians.The Orchestra changed its name to CUHK Chung Chi Orchestra in September 2001 and is supported by The Chung Chi College. Members of the Orchestra come from the Music Department as well as other Colleges of the University and also music lovers from other tertiary institutes.
Since its establishment, the Chung Chi Orchestra has accomplished numerous performances covering works from the Baroque period to the 20th century classical period. Other than its annual concerts, the Orchestra has performed in the 60th and 50th Anniversary Concerts of the Chung Chi College and the United College in 2011 and 2006 respectively; and recorded the New Asia College Anthem for the 60th Anniversary of the New Asia College in 2009. It has also collaborated with the Baptist University Orchestra and organized joint concerts in the years 2002, 2003 and 2004.
In the past decades, the Chung Chi Orchestra was inspired both musically and intellectually under the baton of Professor David Gwilt, Professor Law Ping-leung Daniel, Professor Chan Wing-wah, JP and other maestros. The Orchestra is currently trained by Professor Carmen Koon, the Music Director and Principal Conductor; and has regular rehearsals in the Lee Hysan Hall every Monday at 7:30pm.
