Yuen Cheuk Wa is the Acting Dean of the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He has more than 20 years of experience in sound design in both Hong Kong and abroad. Wa earned a BFA (First Class Honours) in Theatre Technical Arts at the HKAPA; an MFA (Sound Design) supported by the prestigious Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Fellowship at the California Institute of the Arts; and an MSc in Architectural Sciences at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
He received the Best Sound Design award from Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies for the score that he created for Hong Kong Repertory Theatre’s Secret of Resurrection. He was also one of five winning theatre designers to represent Hong Kong at Prague Quadrennial 2011.
Prior to joining the HKAPA in 2018, Wa was the Manager of Technical & Production (Performing Arts) at the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority.
A prolific sound designer, Wa produced and directed the highly acclaimed multimedia concert, Primary Shapes: an Eternal Golden Braid, commissioned by the Hong Kong Arts Festival. He flexed his expertise in 3D audio when he created a 52-channel surround-soundscape for the panoramic multimedia spectacular, Bubble Show: Year of Dragon, for City Of Dreams Macau, and he developed an original multi-channel musical-soundscape for Swire Properties’ Pacific Place Mall. His other notable multimedia works include Blending Worlds – Primary Shapes x DJ Tommy and 5_(5) The Interviews in Sync.
In collaboration with Vee Leong and Tam Wai-ping, he conceived, as a principal artist & sonic writer, the cross-disciplinary work Claustrophobia. He developed a binaural soundscape of parallel narratives for the entire audience.
In addition to his professional practice, Wa has presented at the international conferences of Audio Engineering Society, Acoustical Society of America, and the Academy’s International Symposium of Practice-as-Research.
