Awarded with three Masques d’Ors in Moscow for its premiere with the Bolshoi Ballet in 2014, Jean-Christophe Maillot’s The Taming of the Shrew—now danced by his own dance company, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo—is “a rollicking, rumbustious and romantic production” (The Times) with a fundamentally serious theme: the search for one’s better half.
Virtuosity and subtle humour in every gesture
A new take on Shakespeare’s vivid but controversial play
“A rollicking, rumbustious and romantic production” ★★★★ The Times
“Great fun and fast paced...everyone enjoyed dancing in it.” ★★★★★ Bachtrack
An epic ballet created by Jean-Christophe Maillot in 2014 for the Bolshoi Ballet, The Taming of the Shrew was awarded three Masques d’Ors in Moscow. This brilliant production is now danced by Maillot’s own dance company – Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo.
Although largely humorous with a healthy sense of irony, the ballet tackles a fundamentally serious theme: the search for one’s better half. In a world where authenticity is eroded by convention, finding the perfect partner is no small feat, and Shakespeare’s play remains as relevant as ever. Rejecting male dominance within the couple unit, Jean-Christophe Maillot chooses to focus on what’s vital in a romantic relationship.
Maillot has chosen an impressive collection of Shostakovich’s music – taken from several of the composer’s film scores and symphonies – as his composite score, which has been co-ordinated effectively to provide an outstanding composition that works as if created directly for the ballet.
Ernest Pignon-Ernest’s design includes a central staircase that separates at various points on the set, while Dominique Drillot enriches the stage with 3-D mosaic lighting. Together with the modern costumes from Augustin Maillot, this splendid ballet production is sure to enthral the spectators from beginning to end.
