In January 2021, On & On Theatre Workshop present a new adaptation of writer-director Chan Ping-chiu’s acclaimed work Waking Dreams in 1984. Written in 1985 and based on historical facts, the production premiered in 2016 and was named Best Play at the Hong Kong Drama Awards. The new production features original cast member Leung Tin-chak, plus Lau Chun Him and Cecilia Choi – two of Hong Kong’s most sought-after new generation actors – in the lead roles.
Set in the 1980s, at a turning point in Hong Kong’s history, this tale of identity and idealism unfolds as two brothers – activists in the 1970s student movement whose lives have now taken different paths – reconnect in a colonial-style building with a group of intellectual and artist friends.
Examining the present through the lens of the past, the play explores the tension between dreams, reality and the hopes of different generations, and casts a reflective eye on the destiny of a city … a lucid dream in a borrowed place on borrowed time.
