Matthew Bourne — The Master Storyteller of Modern Dance

“Terrifically entertaining” ★★★★ The Times

Matthew Bourne has been hailed as “the great showman of British dance” by The Daily Telegraph. Since 1987, when he formed his first company, Adventures in Motion Pictures, Bourne has earned international renown as a great storyteller through music and movement. His radical reinterpretations of classic works in ballet, theatre and cinema regularly elicit rave reviews from critics, and enchant audiences of all ages.

Bourne’s Cinderella, set to Prokofiev’s score, had its world premiere in London in 1997 and sets the story amid the chaos of the Second World War. The internationally acclaimed choreographer’s interpretation of the classic fairy tale has, at its heart, a true war-time romance. A chance meeting results in a magical night for Cinderella and her dashing young RAF pilot, together just long enough to fall in love before being parted by the horrors of the Blitz. Bourne’s vivid story telling has never been more heart-stopping or touching, and will immerse the audience in Prokofiev’s magnificent score.

This ballet film—available for viewing only by registration to a limited audience and for a limited time—is presented alongside a behind-the-scene video under the PLUS programme, offering a unique insight into the creative process of this thrilling production.

To offer a broader view of Matthew Bourne’s art, for a limited time, the HKAF will also screen online recordings of another three career-defining Bourne productions—Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet and The Red Shoes.
