Igor Moiseyev’s legacy in dance – Russian in essence, global in scope

One of the Russia’s greatest dance companies celebrates an illustrious history that extends over eight decades of excellence in choreographic creativity and breathtaking performance

“Lives up to its hype as a national treasure, potently demonstrating the Russian genius for dance.” The Guardian

The Igor Moiseyev Ballet is one of the world’s leading dance companies. Following the example of its founder and namesake it has always embraced inspiration from the culture, music, history and dance traditions of the many countries it has visited.

In a unique video programme, specially curated for the finale of the 49th HKAF, the Ballet will take the audience on a journey which begins, appropriately, with Summer, in which bright red and white costumes evoke all the cheerful exuberance of the season, and first rehearsed on February 10th, 1937, the day the company came into being.

We then travel with the dancers to Azerbaijan for The Shepherds, followed by a suite of modern Greek folk dances entitled Sirtaki, then on to a choreographic evocation of the “beautiful game” of Football.

A Spanish ballade set in the world of Prosper Mérimées Carmen precedes the exquisite Pamir, which transports us to the mountains of Central Asia. We then join the Russian Navy for the Naval Suite Yablochko, sailing on to Argentina where the cowboys of the pampas perform Gaucho. The journey ends on a note of lyrical grace with the choreographic picture At the Skating Rink.

As part of the Festival PLUS programme, a documentary film in which the Ballet’s Artistic Director Elena Aleksandrovna Shcherbakova talks about her artistic journey with the company. The film includes vintage footage and historic photos.
