Mix: Re/Tape 2.0
A sound installation on music storage and consumption by Neo Kim Seng (Singapore)

Clouds spotted near eye-level on the Parade Ground! Walk around these cassette tape clouds playing music snippets and discover past billboard top-charters, forgotten gems and more. The literal sound cloud installation will question how we store and consume music, and how else might music be stored and consumed in the future? In our increasingly digitised world, is there a role left for the analogue?

Cassette tapes were once the preferred medium for music storage for their portability. As technology evolved, analogue tapes eventually gave way to CDs, which in turn lost their popularity with the advent of digital downloads and online streaming. Now, streaming music platforms can even create playlists and mixtapes automatically based on your listening history. There are also online music distribution and sharing websites like Soundcloud that allows everyone to upload music and share with the whole world.

Mix: Re/Tape 2.0 is a site-specific installation incorporating cassette tapes and music. It not only brings you back in time through beloved tunes, but also invites you to ponder the future of music consumption: after streaming, what’s next?

This second iteration of Mix: Re/Tape is curated by Singapore artist Neo Kim Seng and designed by Sarah Chua.
