Overview

Phantoms Within brings a fresh take on one of the most exciting contemporary dance forms. A breathtaking show about physicality and the power of healing through dance.
An exhilarating breakdance spectacle with dancers of different abilities.

Directed by the choreographer based in the UK Mickael Marso’ Riviere, this show explores the limits of physicality through hip-hop and contemporary dance with differently abled dancers from Europe and Hong Kong.

Breakdancing is one of the most physically demanding types of dance there is, but that doesn’t mean people with disabilities can’t get involved. British choreographer Mickael ‘Marso’ Riviere was inspired by the story of a friend who had a leg amputated as a teenager to create a show that explores the experience of amputees.

Phantoms Within works with dancers of different abilities from both Hong Kong and Europe, including star German dancer with one hand Vehbi Can, to mount an exciting hiphop-fuelled show. It will be performed on the Laundry Steps at Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts, a splendid outdoor location for an exhilarating show the likes of which you’ve never seen.

Mickael ‘Marso’ Riviere and his dancers test the limits of physicality and, as the show’s title suggests, looks at how phantom limbs and the “memory” of missing sensations affect people differently.

Phantoms Within takes the infectious, liberating potential of breakdance to offer a spectacle that is a plea for empathy and greater inclusiveness in society and the arts.
