Hulu Culture

Founded in 2009, Hulu Culture is a non-profit and cultural organization, aiming to preserve and promote Hong Kong local culture. Through fusing traditions into arts and design and organizing various kinds of exhibitions and events, the organization protects traditional cultural heritage, represents local spirit and stimulates folk creativity, and consequently enhances public’s understanding in local culture. Moreover, the organization creates platforms and opportunities for people from different social strata to participate and share, hoping that the future generations will be beneficial and see the value of local culture.

Since 2010, the organization has received sponsorship from the Hong Kong Jockey Club and has organized the Hong Kong Jockey Club Heritage x Arts x Design Walk Project, featuring different districts. With workshops and community guided tours, the project showcases the history, culture and essence of the districts to ensure the inheritance of local culture and to inject new energy in the community.
Hulu Culture has also established its first social enterprise in 2012. Named “Too Proud Design”, the social enterprise is funded by Enhancing Self-Reliance Through District Partnership Programme (ESR) of the Home Affairs Department. To inspire the creative talents of the young adults, they are trained in the form of studios, and provide excellence service and creative products.

In 2014, the organization received another grant from the ESR Programme to fund its second social enterprise. Titled “See Through Craftsman”, which located at PMQ at Sheung Wan, the shop inherits and conserves the artistic skills of local craftsman. Apart from inviting local contemporary artists and designers to collaborate with the craftsmen, “See Through Craftsman” has frequently organized various kinds of cultural events, such as thematic workshops on craftsmanship and design and Central and Sheung Wan cultural tours. Through a series of interactive events, the organization hopes to arouse the public’s interest in the humanistic values of craftsmanship.

Since 2019, Hulu Culture joined the Yim Tin Tsai Arts Festival organized by Tourism Commission as the curator for this three-year pilot scheme. The organization invites local and overseas artists as well as youngsters to co-create with the villagers, bringing to participants new experience integrating arts, religion, culture, heritage and green elements and turn the island into an “open museum”.

Meanwhile, Hulu Culture also continues to promote Hong Kong local culture. In 2020, the organization has received sponsorship from the Hong Kong Jockey Club and started the new project Hong Kong Jockey Club Heritage x Arts x Design Walk Plus. Aiming to connect different sectors in the communities and pass on the work of cultural promotion and education to the residents, organizations and young people of the district, and achieve the purpose of community revitalization and increase the sustainability of cultural promotion.
