Spring Dyes: The Colours of the NatureCentre for Heritage, Arts and Textile

Over the past few seasons, CHAT has been experimenting with many exciting ways to dye textiles using natural processes. In this workshop, participants will be able to dye using CHAT’s homegrown indigo paste and learn how to turn kitchen waste and natural products into exciting textile dyes inspired by the colours of nature.

Dyeing a range of dusty pinks (avocado pits and skins), bright yellow (Cape jasmine), beige (coffee) and blue (indigo), participants will practice resist dye techniques to make their own textile artwork.

For this workshop, CHAT teams up with KOKO Coffee Roasters at The Mills to upcycle their coffee grounds and avocado pits and skins to develop dyeing vats. Join us with family and friends for a session of natural dyeing and learning how to upcycle kitchen waste.

Experience level: No prior experience is needed. Suitable for children aged 6 and above. Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult.

Materials needed: Participants will be provided with a tenugui (Japanese cotton towel) for dyeing. Participants are invited to bring their own T-shirt or small cotton item (scarf, tote bag, shirt) for dyeing. These items must be previously washed in hot water with mild soap. Kindly note we cannot accommodate bigger pieces such as dresses, jackets or garments in heavyweight fabrics.
