For a composer under the age of 30, Gustav Mahler was considered very ambitious when his Symphony No. 1 was premiered in 1889, due to the grand scale of the orchestration. It did not achieve success when it was premiered but today Mahler is considered as one of the greatest composers of all time. His use of the different instruments in the orchestra is rich and brought orchestral sounds and colours to new heights. He allowed the different sections of the orchestra to shine at various times and yet collaboratively it worked so well. If you are new to Mahler or classical music, this symphony will be a great start to understand the genius of the great composer and the richness of the sound that an orchestra can produce. Come and hear it live!
