Overview

The complex and vibrant history of Central Asia is intrinsically interwoven with the development of textile and contemporary art of the region. How can we connect the dots between different inspirations and symbols coming from everyday life to comprehend the cultural significances of Central Asia through fashion and contemporary arts?

In this artist sharing, Uzbek textile designer and artist Dilyara Kaipova will be sharing not only her valuable insights on ornament and its relationship with craft and fashion in Central Asia, but also her exquisite ikat collection with patterns and motif of visual traditions. By sharing her collection with us, she will provide a visual representation of the cultural traditions that have inspired her work and offer a uniquely interactive opportunity to explore the rich history and artistry of Uzbek textiles. Independent contemporary art curator, writer and lecturer Yuliya Sorokina from Kazakhstan will then share her substantial research about domestic technologies and its vital role to the development of contemporary art in post-Soviet countries. Together, the two speakers will offer a fascinating dialogue in exploring new perspectives on the rich cultural heritage and its influence to fashion and contemporary art. The sharing will be moderated by CHAT curator Wang Weiwei and concluded with a Q&A session.

After the talk, a performance by Sydney-based Hong Kong artist Pamela Leung and local writer and independent curator Yang Yeung will take place within the exhibition space at CHAT. Click here to learn more and RSVP for a fruitful evening.
