Grand Dance Poem "A Dance of Celestial Rhythms"

In timeless communion with nature, we dance

The “Twenty-Four Solar Terms” is a strict temporal order rooted in traditional Chinese philosophical thought. Following the passage of the seasons, the ancients ploughed in spring, cultivated in summer, harvested in autumn, and stored up food in winter. With the transitions of the solar terms, nature comes alive in glorious colours and fragrances. This spectacular performance captivates the senses with stunning visual, acoustic, and lighting effects. Our journey begins by immersing us in the senses, moving through the cycles of time and life, and ultimately returning to consciousness. Come and experience this inspirational dance journey with us!

Chinese Dance X Martial Arts "Convergence"

Infinity of Movement and Stillness

Convergence is the culmination of an interdisciplinary research study on Chinese dance and Chinese martial arts traditions. This is the first live performance of Convergence in Hong Kong. Its inaugural performance, co-presented with Freespace, was broadcast online in 2020, due to the pandemic. Convergence was awarded the Hong Kong Dance Award for Outstanding Online Production in 2022.
In the Company’s three-year-long study, our artists explored the essence of these traditional practices, discovering new perspectives on movement and the fluidity of expression between ideology and physical gesture. In this synergy of dance and martial arts, the dancers bring these discoveries together, capturing the transience between stillness and motion, tranquillity and exuberance.

Contemporary Dance Theatre "HerStory"

Unravelling esoteric writings by, of, and about women

This dance production is a contemporary extension of Nüshu (“women’s script”), the written language developed and used exclusively by women in Jiangyong county, Hunan province, China, which has a four-hundred-year history.

Inspired by Nüshu and winner of two awards at the 2008 Hong Kong Dance Awards, "HerStory" is the final part of “Women’s Trilogy” created by renowned choreographer Helen Lai. The dance idiom is likened to writing in Chinese, from which emerge emotive personal stories of women and evoke collective memories. By weaving in the writings of two female authors from Hong Kong, Xi Xi and Wong Bik-wan, along with dance, music and imagery, Lai is joining hands with Hong Kong Dance Company to re-stage "HerStory" in this December.

Folk Dance Medley "Lands in the South"

A tribute to the dance legacy of Southern China

Lingnan culture is rich in distinctive local customs and cultural characteristics. In this performance, Hong Kong Dance Company (HKDC) joins hands with several guest choreographers to bring together various Lingnan dances rooted in daily life. This dance performance presents the lives of people from different ethnic groups and their hometown sentiments. From the rice paddies of the Hakka people and the floating culture of the Tanka people to Yao embroidery, the Guangdong lion dance, and herbal tea (liangcha), all listed as National Intangible Cultural Heritage, these cultural symbols with their deep historical imprints are integrated into stage projection, taking the audience on a journey through the personalities and social faces of Lingnan culture and showcasing the long history of Chinese culture.

Young talents from HKDC Children’s and Youth Troupes will also perform a tea-picking dance full of childlike wonder and Yao drum dance with distinctive rhythms, interpreting Lingnan customs and traditions and inspiring artistic legacy through dance.

Grand Dance Drama "The Legend of Lanling"

Lanling, in ancient tale, mighty in skill yet with fragile visage,
In every encounter, a mask adorns courage to the battlefield.

In guise, borrowing divinity from the mask, swift and valiant,
Traversing the battlefield, donned in hues of war and command.

In dance amidst the fray, a query lingers,
Who is the true sovereign, the genuine self-elusive.

In descending twilight’s embrace, flags and drums at rest,
Half a lifetime devoted to martial pursuits, success, unaccomplished till the last.

In Lanling's martial array, a dance mirroring the heart,
Reality, unmasked, reveals its genuine grace.

Masks may be shed, but the true self remains concealed. Twenty dancers, trained in martial arts, Nangun, and drumming, transcend convention and seamlessly merge dance with martial arts.

Existence is a battlefield where life is perceived as a dance, focused, serene, fearless, and unburdened by regret, akin to stepping into the fray.
