Overview

Multiverse in Film Arts invites six prominent production designers and costume designer from Hong Kong, including Man Lim-Chung, Alfred Yau, Cheung Siu-Hong, Bill Lui, Dora Ng and Eric Lam, to each select a work from world cinema that has been influential to them, or has made groundbreaking achievements in film arts, including The Color of Pomegranates (1969), Throne of Blood (1957), Songs from the Second Floor (2000), High Heels (1991), Grease (1978) and Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). At the same time, they have also each chosen an iconic work of their own, including The Silent War (2012), The Grandmaster (2013), Mad World (2017), Green Snake (1993), And I Hate You So (2000) and The Pye-Dog (2007). Through this programme, we hope to explore the depths and global development of film arts in terms of culture, trends and styles, while also showcasing the artistic features and styles of different genres (such as period film, contemporary film, action thriller, melodrama and romantic comedy) of Hong Kong cinema.

Besides the 12 local and foreign films selected by our guests, two additional Hong Kong films are included as references in the programme to facilitate an in-depth discussion on the scope of work, challenges and development of film arts. Two thematic seminars will also be organised to deepen the audience’s understanding of production design from multiple angles. The first seminar will be a conversation by Chou Tak-Fu, art director of Raging Fire (2021) with VFX experts Alex Lim and Yee Kwok- Leung, discussing the interactivities between creative trends of visuals effects and film arts. The second seminar invites the creative team of Where the Wind Blows (2023), including director Philip Yung, production designer Bill Lui and image director Dora Ng, to share about the process of visualizing the script – joining forces to build the visuals and style of a film from scratch, while overcoming all sorts of challenges.
