Caacaanteng waiter Leung Ping loves hearing his gangster friends’ tales about the exploits of Fook Sung gang boss Long Ching. By coincidence, Leung Ping’s triad dream comes true when he is taken under Long Ching’s wings, and he even reunites with childhood crush Nina. But things quickly go sideways when Long Ching gets into a clash in a cinema with Lui Lone, an actor and the boss of the rival Lo Fung gang. Despite wanting to settle the feud, Long Ching is killed in battle. Leung Ping wants to avenge Long Ching, but what awaits him is a bizarre rude awakening.
A response to the triad film craze in 1996, director Wilson Yip and screenwriter Philip Kwok deconstruct the Hong Kong triad myth intertextually. Employing satirical dark comedy, they bring the triad genre into a postmodern context. The filmmakers’ playful take on the everyday lives of triad boys as well as pop culture references will surprise and tickle audiences.

Thinking outside the box and always choosing the unexpected, Wilson Yip has never been limited by conventions. He finds humanity in absurd situations, portrays deep emotions in a leisurely manner, and finds genuine emotions in tough action films. His penchant for against the grain can be seen in his offbeat sense of humour, underlined by criticism of reality and reflexes against impermanence.
Coming just before the release of his latest film, featuring ten films, "Gently Rebellious──Wilson Yip Retrospective Programme" is the perfect opportunity to revisit the filmmaker’s creative versatility.
