Overview

Written, directed and performed by renowned British theatre maker Tim Crouch, Truth's a Dog Must to Kennel takes the character of the Fool from King Lear and radically imagines what happened after his abrupt exit midway through the play. What follows is a wildly inventive blend of Shakespeare and stand-up comedy that examines the post-pandemic status of the performing arts.

Crouch, donning a VR headset while playing the Fool, draws on the idea of virtual reality to send the Fool back to the world of the Shakesperean play he left. Drawing a parallel between Lear's world, laid waste by division and trauma, and the present realities of entertainment, still reeling from the aftermath of the pandemic, it mourns the death of live theatre while reinventing it at the same time.

Making its Asian premiere at the 2024 HKAF after an extensive tour to renowned European theatres and festival in Europe including the Avignon Festival, the show is in turns hilarious, sombre and scathing—a jester's joke that speaks the uncomfortable truth.

An Obie and Fringe First award-winning playwright, director and actor, Crouch is known for his daringly experimental approach to theatre that pushes its boundaries both as a storytelling medium and a conceptual art form. Dedicated to the audience experience, he continuously challenges conventions and creates meticulously crafted, ever-evolving works.
