Gazing once more at the water, to observe what might have been overlooked: the gentle sway of small boats, moving up and down in harmony with ancient cadences, their primal construction often overshadowed by relentless progress, yet evolving into a symbiotic extension of nature. The timeless sampan, weathered through centuries and resilient amidst the tumultuous tides of change, stands as an emblem of continuity in a rapidly shifting world. However, in a future dominated by commodified time and reclaimed coastlines, what space might remain for it?
Choreographed by Ivanhoe Lam, "Still, Not Still" Multi-disciplinary Dance Performance ponders the sampan, delving into questions of balance amid flux and the essence of home and community. Featuring Gigi Yang, Han Mei, and Wei Wei Lam—three dancers who traveled far to settle in this land in search of home. Together with young dancers from School of Dance, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, they paint a vivid portrait of people, home, and transformation. Bringing together a multicultural team of artists from diverse fields, this performance seamlessly blends physical theatre with Chinese folk dance, poetry, electronic music, and video.
