

HKUST Summer Festival 2024:
Pulse of Change - Contemporary Percussion and Sustainable Soundscapes

Toolbox Percussion's "Pulse of Change" will feature a captivating array of innovative compositions and performances.
Nathaniel Stookey's "Junkestra" on mesmerizing display of upcycled instruments will be staged after the Hong Kong premiere by Toolbox Percussion in 2023; Ken Ueno's "Arashiyama" on bamboo with its ethereal sounds as a versatile and evocative instrument will stage its Hong Kong premiere. Other works including "Urban Construction" by Austin Yip, "Torched and Wrecked" by David Skidmore and works by Philip Glass also express a completely different sentiment. Through masterful compositions for marimba, vibraphone, bamboo, and various found objects, Toolbox Percussion will transport audiences on a sonic journey exploring themes of cultural diversity, sustainability, and social change.

HKUST Summer Festival 2024:
Percussion x Sustainability Workshop
DATE AND TIME : Jun 7, 2024 (Fri) | 4:30 - 6:00 pm
Led by Upcycling Product Designer, Kevin CHEUNG, participants will be introduced to upcycling and sustainability and also revitalize the plastics bottles which people normally treat as trash into musical instrument.
With the instrument created by every participant, they will actively participate in the Cobra performance, contributing their own musical ideas and responses to create a spontaneous and collaborative composition. This unique and immersive experience will foster creativity, active listening, and ensemble communication skills, leaving participants inspired and empowered to explore the limitless possibilities of music.

PROGRAM PARTNER: Toolbox Percussion
Toolbox Percussion has been driving percussive arts programming in Hong Kong since 2012, curating ambitious music projects in innovative ways. Toolbox Percussion, as a creative incubator, works to make new music happen by commissioning, collaborating, professional training, performing, recording and touring contemporary performances. Believe in the beautiful concerted efforts of every young talent we involve. Toolbox Percussion continues to empower the audience to discover versatility in daily soundscapes by anchoring our work closely to the here and now of Hong Kong.
Over the past seasons, Toolbox Percussion toured to Asia Culture Center at Gwangju in South Korea and made its US debut at the San Francisco International Arts Festival. Other appearances included Shipyard 1862 Theatre in Shanghai, Zhuhai Grand Theatre, and active involvement in audience development programmes co-presented by Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Hong Kong Arts Festival PLUS, and Tai Kwun. Toolbox Percussion also curated Toolbox International Creative Academy in 2019. The festival has reached its 5th Edition in 2023 and collaborated with numerous industrial veterans including GRAMMY Award winners.
Co-hosted with the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco in 2019, works of Toolbox Percussion were showcased in an exhibition titled "A Double Listen" for the first time in the United States. This sound-based exhibition became an ongoing project as a core production series, a scalable rerun was held at H Queen's in June 2021, a site-specific edition for ArtisTree in August 2022. A sound-based art exhibition, "A DOUBLE LISTEN: Yama no Oto" was toured to Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale in Summer 2023.
Toolbox Percussion is currently a three-year grantee of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
ARTIST: Kevin, CHEUNG Wai Chun
Hong Kong Upcycling Product Designer, Kevin CHEUNG devotes himself in developing upcycling products and raising public's eco-awareness. At the same time, he believes that designers have the ability and obligation to protect the environment in order to sustain the balance between the eco-system, economy and the society. His focus is turning the waste into attractive and contemporary artworks and products.
