Thematic Talk – Building & Exploring: Variations in Public Housing Design | COMMUNITY HANGOUT@MEI HO HOUSEHeritage of Mei Ho House

2024-11-03 ( 3:00 PM ~ 4:30 PM )
Free Admission
Overview

On Christmas night in 1953, a tragic fire in Shek Kip Mei left over 50,000 homeless, prompting the government to initiate the construction of public housing. From the temporary "Bowring Bungalows" to the resettlement estates for disaster victims, the "Ten-Year Housing Programme," and the Harmony Blocks constructed from the 1990s to the early 2000s, to the commonly seen non-standard blocks today, the design of public housing has continuously evolved, reflecting the broader development of the city. Over the past seventy years, what factors have driven the ongoing evolution in the design of public housing?

This thematic talk is honored to invite Ar. Dr. Rosman Wai Chui Chi, who has over thirty years of experience in the Housing Department and is currently an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Architecture. She will guide us in exploring the development of public housing design from architectural, social, economic, and other perspectives.
