簡介

The immersive performance engages and celebrates the community of elders who built beautiful folk structures on the mountain for three decades, selflessly picking up from those they never met, offering their scenography to today’s generation of precarious dwellers. Young performers summon the mountain’s archetypal force, whispering their intimate revolt to its dark forest, infinite branches lullabying their resilience and water undercurrents supplying their faiths. The dramaturgy knots performers’ individuation arcs with the epic of this tale, weaving a micro geography of the local psyche through the ethnographic method.

Among 山寨Shanzhai Stories, The 水滸傳Water Margin is the most famous. Considered China's earliest full-length narrative in vernacular prose, and one of the four Great Classical Novels, its many versions were first printed in the fourteenth century.

A tangle of tales of outlaws retreating from the Song Dynasty army up onto a small mountain, it evolved from a long oral tradition of connected legends surrounding heroes who — persecuted, exploited, wronged, or trapped by officials — climb together for a final standoff.

For seven centuries these tales have been providing a cornerstone for marginal codes of honour, secret societies and peripheral movements.
