In 2010, Shanghai joined the UNESCO Creative Cities of Design network, and in 2022, Shanghai Design Week ( SHDW ) debuted as a key milestone in the city's growth. Organized by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology, SHDW promotes design innovation and industrial transformation.

The 2024 "Design to Wonderland" initiative will position Shanghai as a global hub for consumer brands, featuring exhibitions and events focused on sustainability, cultural aesthetics, and design-driven innovation. A highlight, Yi Pan Long, is a sustainable product series merging traditional Chinese culture with modern design, using ten sustainable materials and technologies like CNC and 3D printing.
