Overview

The Dickens Bar in the Excelsior Hotel was once a staple of the Hong Kong jazz scene from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. International musicians would turn up to enjoy the sounds of the Tony Carpio Jazz Band every Sunday afternoon for 18 years.

On the first Sunday of the month, audiences would be treated to Hong Kong's best 18-piece jazz orchestra, the Tony Carpio Big Band, performing Glen Miller and Count Basie classics whilst serenading guests as they marched around the bar for their final numbers.

At a very young age, Bernard and Chris (The Carpio Brothers, sons of Tony Carpio) would always take stage dancing with their mini saxophones and conducting beside their father.

The Dickens Bar not only planted the seed for The Carpio Brothers' music journey but also made an everlasting impact on the Hong Kong jazz scene.

This concert is designed to recollect the best moments of the Dickens Bar. The Carpio Brothers will take you down memory lane featuring the Tony Carpio Big Band and some special guests.

This concert is one of the programmes of “Jazz in the Neighbourhood”, co-presented by Jazz World (HK) Ltd. and Count-in Music Ltd., Venue Partners of Tsuen Wan Town Hall, with the aim of promoting jazz music through a series of performances and education programmes.
