"Sensory Transcode" Artists talk on "Audio and Visual Perceptions of Languages"Hong Kong Arts Development Council

The sound of speech is a carrier of the symbolic system of language. It is created by the human vocal organs, and carries the meaning of language. The sound of language is closely connected to the meaning of language. Although language is a kind of sound, it is fundamentally different from other sounds in general. On the other hand, sounds from site-specific artworks and soundscapes often create impressions that transcend our audio and visual perceptions.

Fascinated by the study of sound and language, in his works, Chaklam Ng often tries to pull apart the two and re-integrate them again, challenging our daily perception of langauges through our sense of hearing. N A T P, an art group consisting of graduates from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, is known for creating spaces that merge multiple media such as light and sound. Their artworks often provide an alternative vision for the viewers, transporting them to a brand new dimension.

Both Chaklam Ng and N A T P work with sound coding and space coding as artists. In this talk, they will speak about their works and how they combine art and technology to code the audience’s senses.
