Celebrated as one of the greatest opera composers, Puccini brought Italian opera to an unprecedented height. Born into a church musician family, it seemed destined for him to further the family legacy by serving in the local church. At age 18, however, an encounter with Verdi's Aïda turned his world upside down. The intrigue and passion of the operatic language "opened a new door" to him. Composing this mass at the age of 22 as an ode of farewell to sacred music, he unabashedly jumped into the world of opera extravaganza, and never looked back.
