Beare’s Premiere Music Festival 2023

The 2023 Beare’s Premiere Music Festival celebrates the 15th anniversary of Premiere Performances with our milestone artists and programmes!

The Festival will bring together Cho-Liang Lin, the Festival Artistic Director since 2012 who transformed the Chamber Music Festival into one of the best in Asia; Romer String Quartet, Premiere Performances’ first quartet-in-residence since 2018, and local star pianist Rachel Cheung who took part in Premiere Performances’ first masterclass as a student in 2008 and performed in our Recital Series in 2021. The Festival also features the return of Carnival of the Zodiac, from the first-ever Family Series (2013).

A long-awaited violin recital by our Festival Artistic Director Cho-liang Lin!

The Taiwan-American violinist Cho-Liang Lin is one of the most successful violinists on international stage today. His concert career launched in 1980 with the New York Philharmonic and Zubin Mehta, and he has since performed as a soloist with virtually every major orchestra in the world. His albums have won Gramophone Record of the Year, Grammy nominations and Penguin Guide Rosettes. He has been the Artistic Director of the Beare’s Premiere Music Festival (formerly the Hong Kong International Chamber Music Festival) since 2012, transforming it into one of the best chamber music festivals in Asia.

In this violin recital, Cho-Liang Lin teams up with pianist Evelyn Chang for a night of heartfelt music by Bach, Schumann, Brahms, Debussy and the pianist Evelyn Chang herself.

Beare’s Premiere Music Festival 2023:Carnival of the Zodiac Family Concert

 

Ringo Chan has to withdraw from the advertised performance of “Carnival of the Zodiac”. We are grateful to have violist Yu Sun to step in for the performance. The other details remain unchanged.

Carnival of the Zodiac is a delightful adaptation of Saint-Saëns’ beloved Carnival of the Animals, reworked for Chinese New Year by Haylie Ecker. With additional movements by Dobrinka Tabakova and poems by Nury Vittachi, this is sure to become a Hong Kong classic! First performed in the 2013 Hong Kong International Chamber Music Festival (now Beare’s Premiere Music Festival).

Beare’s Premiere Music Festival 2023:Romer String Quartet & Rachel Cheung

 

The Romer String Quartet will be joined by Hong Kong star pianist Rachel Cheung for a night of Mozart and Dvořák.

The esteemed local quartet has made appearances at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall (New York) and the Toppan Hall (Tokyo). The quartet is also active locally, making appearances at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Taiwan Hong Kong Week and more. They have been Premiere Performances’ Quartet-in-Residence since 2018 and are a participating ensemble in Premiere Performances’ Chamber Music Schools Programme since 2019.

Also joining us is Hong Kong’s own Van Cliburn finalist and Audience Prize winner, pianist Rachel Cheung. Rachel gave a recital for us in 2021 to rave reviews, and will “dazzle the audience with her artistry and poetry” (Interlude 2021) in this celebration of Premiere Performances’ 15th anniversary.

Beare’s Premiere Music Festival 2023:Boris Giltburg Piano Recital

 

Moscow-born Israeli pianist Boris Giltburg is lauded across the globe as a deeply sensitive, insightful and compelling interpreter. Critics have praised his “singing line, variety of touch and broad dynamic palette capable of great surges of energy” (Washington Post) as well as his impassioned, narrative-driven approach to performance. In 2020, Giltburg recorded and filmed all 32 of Beethoven’s sonatas, winning critics and listeners rave reviews with his superb artistry.

Giltburg regularly plays recitals in the world’s most prestigious halls, including the Concertgebouw, the Carnegie Hall, Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, Wiener Konzerthaus and Southbank Centre. He also constantly works with the top orchestras and the conductors across the world.

Giltburg’s numerous recordings have won the pianist several prestigious awards, including the Opus Klassik award for Best Soloist Recording, a Diapason d’Or and a Gramophone Award.

In his upcoming Hong Kong recital, Giltburg will be bringing his signature Beethoven, Schumann’s colourful Carnaval, and two dazzling Chopin Ballades.
