Overview

Tallis Vocalis start off the celebration of their 10th anniversary season with a masterpiece of Italian composer Carlo Gesualdo. His 9-movement Tenebrae Responsories written for Holy Saturday is characterized by lush harmonies, chromaticism, and dissonance, pushing the boundaries of Renaissance music. The text, focusing on the lamentations of Christ, is vividly brought to life through Gesualdo's expressive and innovative musical language. The programme is complemented with Alonso Lobo’s magnificent Versa est in luctum, and a new commissioned piece, Elegy 1766, written by our Associate Composer, Vanissa Law, which is a choral reflection on Lobo’s masterpiece.

Peter Phillips, director of the world-famous Tallis Scholars, will conduct the concert as part of his season-long collaboration with Tallis Vocalis on their 10th anniversary season.

- The concert runs approximately 1 hour with no intermission.
