Hong Kong Local Ceramic Art Fair (HKLCAF)

Hong Kong has always had a small group of ceramic lovers, artists, and, more importantly, the incubators of cultivating local ceramic culture — nourishing the local ceramic-making culture by setting up ceramic studios and working tirelessly behind the scenes. As a result, the atmosphere of ceramic creation on the ground has a growing intensity in recent years.

We hope to bring together the ceramics culture and elevate it into a platform where ceramic art followers in Hong Kong and worldwide can put this group of talented local ceramicists in the limelight and unveil what “Hong Kong’s Ceramics” means.

We had a play on words for the Chinese title of the Local Ceramic Art Fair. The Cantonese pronunciation is "jat1 bun2 dei6 tou4"「一本地陶」. By extending its literal meaning, "jat 1" is a denotation of "one, the first"; "bun2 dei6" shares the same characters as the word for "local". Here, these four words are a metaphor for "The First Large-scale Ceramic Art Fair held in Hong Kong" — where we gather local ceramicists and present a holistic view of the ceramic scene.

On the second layer – "bun2" is a classifier for a book, and "tou6" is the character for ceramics. "dei6 tou4" 地圖 is a homophone of the word "map" in Chinese. This fair will serve as an entry guide for local and overseas audiences to be part of and delve into Hong Kong's ceramic scene and carry on as documentation for the field annually.
