Overview

“Byeol Yang”
Choreography: CHOI Soyoung
The pandemic has inevitably changed the way we live. In an environment full of constraints and uncertainty, everyday life has become bizarre and ludicrous. In turn, our bodies have responded by embracing new understandings and feelings.

Through a striking minimalist duet, choreographer Choi Soyoung explores how the environment impacts our bodies subconsciously and reshapes its relationship with them. Following features at multiple dance festivals in South Korea and London, this will be the piece’s debut in Hong Kong, with its music created by Kim Jaeduk, recipient of ’Outstanding Music Composition’ at the Hong Kong Dance Awards 2023.

“In My Own Name”
Choreography and Performance: CHO Inho
We know others by their different names, and vice versa. Each of us has layers of identity beyond our names, such as "someone’s son", "someone’s husband", "someone from somewhere", etc. While various adjectives describe us, have we ever truly lived by our own name?
A creative breakthrough of conventional styles, “In My Own Name” is a thought-provoking work by Cho Inho, a choreographer best known for his modern interpretation of breathing and rhythm in traditional Korean dance. By combining dance, movement and live music performance, the piece will showcase the appeal of contemporary Korean dance to local and international audiences alike.

“Quotation Dance”
Concept, Choreography and Text: CHUNG Da Soul
Can dance and choreography be owned, collected or belong to someone? As the third piece in the ‘Copyrights Series’ by Chung Da Soul, “Quotation Dance” raises further questions about the authorship, ownership, and copyrights of dance and choreography. On stage, she cites passages from other artists’ works while constantly revealing their source. From a performer’s body, object to sound and light, elements of choreographic works can never be fully replicated; and such ‘imperfect quotations’ form imaginary choreography and redefine the position of the author.

Choreography: SHIN Changho
Inspired by the eponymous news programme without commentary by EuroNews, Shin Changho created “No Comment” with the belief that a picture paints a thousand words and reflects society through a more neutral lens. Guided by this ethos, he seeks to elicit discussions among audiences about the fundamental purpose of life and reveal its truth through abstract art. This is on full display in “No Comment” with its muscular moves and intriguing dance ensemble. Debuted in 2002, the work has been performed in Canada, Germany, and Italy to great acclaim. It marks its second showcase in Asia in CCDF 2023.

“Hauntology”
Artistic Director and Choreography: KIM Bora
‘What makes our bodies dance?’ Our body is a tangible form that however changes depending on time and condition. Philosopher Jacques Derrida said that the moment of ‘change’ is instantaneous like a ghost that disappears without a trace before it can be captured. In “Hauntology”, Kim Bora breaks away from established structural forms of choreography and tells about the boundary between reality and fantasy through nude performers. Dancing freely on stage like spectres, in their most primitive and naked form, they bring the audience in search of the purest essence of dance.
